A new study finds striking evidence that children who are obese or have high cholesterol show early warning signs of heart disease.
The study, presented at the American Heart Association conference in New Orleans, found that the thickness of artery walls of children and teenagers who are obese or have high cholesterol resembled the thickness of artery walls of an average 45-year-old.
Back in July, the American Academy of Pediatrics began officially recommending that children be screened for cholesterol beginning at age 2 years and be considered for cholesterol-lowering medication at age 8 as a way to manage an epidemic of heart disease being predicted for today's children.
While there are certain cases where drug therapy is probably indicated, there is still a lack of professional opinion as to where the benefits of the drugs out way the potential risks, especially when we’re talking about children.
However, there is no debate, and everyone agrees, that the best course of action is healthy lifestyle changes which carry tremendous benefits and absolutely no risk!
