A number of popular articles and books have sprung up over the past few months that feature the concept of minimalism; that is, need less, want less, be less.
I see where the minimalist advocates are going. By doing less and less you will have to choose between what’s just mindless movement for the sake of movement, and what really matters to you, to your business and life in general. Your life has the feeling of a zen-like effortless effort, as you accomplish things while in the state of “less-ness.” As for this part, I am in full agreement. . . . .
Then. . . . . Start asking yourself if you really need everything you have, or if you just have it out of fear. Start to let go of what you have, so it doesn’t own you. Again, not a bad idea at all.
The final piece. . . .Have less. Do less. . . And this is where I take a 180 turn in the opposite direction.
For some people, stay on the Less-track. If it is working for you, great. Less is more. You can stop reading now, or shall I say. . . . read less.
For others including self, this is the antithesis of how I want to live my life. Granted, I am not a “stuff” collector. I really do not care about cars or collecting art or wines. I do care about collecting experiences. My theory — one that I am in NO hurry to proven nor dis-proven — is that while we “cannot take things with us” when we cross over the River, we will in fact, carry over our special memories and experiences. The ones that had deep meaning and helped impact our lives will be a part of our energy in some way, in some fashion. (Yes, that is my story and I am sticking to it.)
When I run, particularly long runs in Nature, I notice that growth, development and expansion are intricate to the trees, plants and flowers along the path. Nature herself is always in a constant state of change, a continual state of expansion. As such, She is setting the example for those of us who are“Maximalists” - those of us who want to squeeze every ounce of life from Life. Those of us who want to experience all the beauty the world has to offer, to express our inner creativity and feel the full spectrum of what having a body is all about.
Less is not more. MORE is more.
Each time I run the Trail, I note Nature has expanded herself. More trees for the squirrels and birds to increase their families. More plants to serve as food or shade for the ever-growing creatures of the earth. More of everything for all to enjoy.
Who am I to argue with Her perfect template?!
